Summer is here and kids want to have fun, but how do we keep them safe?

Continued
The accommodations on your vacation are very important to consider. If you have an infant or small child, you might want to bring a travel bed or playpen to ensure your baby’s comfort and safety. Most hotels offer baby cribs, all you have to do is ask. When you bring children to an unfamiliar place, you have to make sure it is safe for them. Look around the room for obvious hazards to your child, such as unsafe plugs or electrical wiring that might be within the reach of your child. Oftentimes, balconies and windows can also be accidents waiting to happen. Keep the windows closed and make sure there is no furniture in front of them which your child may be able to use to climb up on and fall out of the window. Balconies have also been known to have big enough slots between railings for small children to squeeze through and fall through. Climbing on top of chairs and falling over the balcony railing seems to be in the news every couple of years. I heard of one case, where a 4-year-old little boy climbed over the balcony railing of his apartment in the high-rise building he was living in and fell down 4 flights. Thank God a tree underneath caught the little boy and he was alive, getting away with just a couple of scrapes and bruises.
When we anticipate what accidents could happen, we are better prepared to prevent them! Our goal is always to have a fun time together and at the same time keep our children protected.

About parentingwithconfidence

I am a mother of three wonderful adult children and a grandmother of three beautiful grandchildren! I have worked in the Early Childhood field for many years and was involved in educating children. Giving counsel to parents and grandparents was an important aspect of my work, which gave me lots of insight into the day to day problems and questions that arise with raising children. Many parents were lacking the confidence to be parents to their children and often needed a little encouragement and advise which I was able to give them.
